Embracing
Challenges Ahead
by George D. Pappas
November 7, 1999
Since January 1999, the Malet Street Gazette emerged from within
The University of London's external law program. With these
modest beginnings, The Malet Street Gazette has developed into an
international community embracing others into our legal
community. Our global community encompasses such countries as
Japan, Malaysia, The United Kingdom, the USA, Canada, Belize,
Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica, The Russian Federation, India,
Serbia, Belgium, and other countries.
With such a global span, it will naturally fall upon the Malet
Street Gazette to write about issues in the legal world in as
many countries as possible. That's why I am proud that the Malet
Street Gazette has started to build an international section in
it's Legal
Resource Library focusing
on bar admissions for different countries. This in of itself is -
to my knowledge, a first anywhere.
Only manpower and funds prevent us from moving even faster. I am
not complaining, given the small group of us who have manned the
Malet Street Gazette, much has already been achieved.
I would like to invite you to submit information or perhaps even
an article that you feel may be valuable to our legal community.
Thus far, our articles have focused on the debate about classroom
versus external study, bar admissions, student profiles, graduate
experiences, and more. I am sure everyone has a unique experience
to share about their study environment. Tell us what obstacles
you face or have already overcome. Post a question in our
discussion forum about the legal issues which may affect your
country, your studies, etc. If you have information about bar
admissions rules in your country, please let us know. If you have
any information about the University of London's LL.B. in your
country, it would be valuable to know what the official position
is with respect to the London degree in terms of bar acceptance.
More than anything, as we approach the Millennium, the Malet
Street Gazette is entering the next century with the hope and
desire to be a unique place of information, analysis, and yes,
influence in the global legal world.
Having said this, Project Professional Access is aiming at the
United States to support the need for US LL.M graduates from ABA
Law Schools who earned their first law degree from either a
foreign (non-US) or non-ABA US Law School - to gain even wider
acceptance in the US. To Date, only 10 US States will accept the
London LL.B. if combined with a US ABA LLM to take their state
bar examination. Except for Tennessee, no US State will accept
your London LL.B (earned externally) alone for meeting their
educational requirements.
The ABA's "legal education committee," has tried to
thwart this acceptance, and the Malet Street Gazette is
determined to write to state Supreme Court Justices, the ABA, and
the law schools offering LL.M degrees so that International Law
Graduates are not shut out of the US legal system. Also, we will
be writing to various foreign bar associations to let them know
that the US ABA is trying to make it even more difficult for
their foreign law graduates to practice in the US. Anyone
interested in supporting or helping out with "Project
Professional Access," should contact me via email.
We hope to have our next issue on line in December, so stay
tuned, and thank you for joining our community.
