DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON AWARDED TO EXTERNAL STUDENTS

Senate House, University of London

Statement by John McConnell, Director, External & Internal Student Administration, University of London, January 1996

1. Degrees and diplomas of the University of London are recongised throughout the world.  Under its Royal Charter of 1836 the University has full degree awarding powers at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  For over 130 years it has made its degrees and diplomas available worldwide through the External System.

2. The University awards a single degree or diploma to both Internal and External students.  The standard of achievement of Internal and External students is judged on exactly the same basis and the University does not distinguish between the awards made to them.

3. The University maintains common standards for Internal and External students in the following ways:

        a) All degrees open to Internal and External students have the same minimum entrance requirements.

        b) Academic quality is provided by Colleges of the University which produce course regulations and syllabuses and nominate Boards of Examiners.

        c) All examination papers whether for Internal or External Students are set by University of London academic staff.  The statutes of the University require that candidate's examination scripts are marked by those staff to exactly the same standard.  The same degree classification is used for both kinds of student.

        d) The degree or diploma certificate awarded to Internal and External students states either the name of the College of the University the student attended, or that he or she studied as an External student.

The University of London is fully committed to the maintenance and development of the External System, and to the enhancement of educational opportunity worldwide.  For over a century it has been a principle of the University's External activities that there should be no dilution or compromising of standards, lest the integrity of the University of London degree be in any way impugned.
