University of London Law Student

AIMING HIGH

Marie Wilkening le-Brun had often dreamed of becoming a lawyer. After studying criminology for many years at the University of Melbourne, she moved from Australia to Germany, where she is a long way towards realising this dream. Marie explains: ‘I have chosen to study a University of London LL.B. by distance learning through NEC because it is an internationally recognised qualification, which is vital for me as I am unaware of where I will live on a long-term basis.’

Marie has been going from strength to strength in her degree, even winning the Brigid Cotter Prize for achieving the best result in the Intermediate examination whilst studying at a distance. But she admits it is a lot of hard work. ‘At the moment I am under a lot of pressure, counting the days still available to cover the syllabus, which I am trying to complete in two years!’

Although the work has been very different to the criminology study she had already done, Marie has had some expert help in making the transition. ‘My tutor has guided me in how to write legal essays. He also sends me articles and other interesting materials. Despite the fact that he has 12 students he still corrects my work and sends it back within a week, which I think for a busy barrister is amazing.’

Despite all the hard work, Marie is nearly at the point of achieving her goal. ‘This course is the most important thing for me in my life. It is something that I always wanted to do, it is one of my life goals and this is why I am able to focus so intensely on my studies.’
